James Tyler Kent Unpublished Materia Medica is a compilation of lectures given by Kent in various places like Hering Medical College and Dunham Medical College. It brings into light the superb work of Kent, many new pictures of the standard, well known remedies and materia medica of some new remedies not presented before by Kent (Abrotanum, Robinia, Tabacum etc). The remedies have been discussed elaborately under the heads of general and particular features.

Dr. Currim tells us the story of how these original papers found their way to him and it is obvious that Dr Currim dedicated himself to making these lectures available to the wider homeopathic community. Over 150 remedies have been listed. The lecture notes have not been mixed, so if there are more than one set of notes on a remedy, then each set is included in its entirety. This makes reading remedy information repetitive at times. The book has a very attractive cover; the quality of the paper and clarity of the print makes it a pleasure to work with. Currim and his publishers have attempted to structure the remedy information under headings and by highlighting words in bold. It is very disappointing though, that this has not been done consistently. I feel that this is a real shame, as it would have made the information much more easily accessible. Being a somewhat impatient reader, I have to admit that this has been causing me frustration. However - as so common with Kent's work - being forced to read more' than a snippet usually reveals gems that may else be overlooked! This book is for scholars of homeopathic remedies who want to compare remedy information in greatest depth. It shows clear dedication to this old master. It will not, in my practice, replace my edition of Kent's Lectures on Materia Medica (B. Jain Publishers, New Delhi, 2000) which includes 50 or so remedies more. But it'll be a valuable addition for some cases and when studying individual remedies in greater depth. |
